SERVICESPsychodynamic Psychotherapy

Many of our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are hardwired and conditioned from our temperaments and our early experiences and coping strategies.  Psychodynamic therapy explores the unconscious process and highlights the connections and patterns in our psyches that come to feel quite natural and habitual to us.  By becoming aware of these unconscious motivators and defenses, we can make conscious choices to direct our lives instead of simply reacting to our circumstances.

FREQUENTLY ASKEDConcerns & Questions

Why do people seek psychotherapy?

Often people go to therapy when they are enduring problems that they have not been able to manage themselves.  Sometimes it is a particularly difficult season in their lives and sometimes it is a life long struggle and battle.  Some seek to change unhealthy patterns in their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to create healthier habits.  Sometimes folks simply want to grow towards a happier and more fulfilling life.  Each person’s life and reason for seeking therapy is theirs, and the benefits each draws from therapy is different.

What is psychotherapy like?

Therapy is an opportunity to enter into a confidential, nonjudgmental environment with a trained professional to explore what is bothering you so you can grow through your problems and discover more about yourself.  You can expect that I will seek to understand your current circumstances as well as your history to learn how your patterns and tendencies are present in what is currently bothering you.

You can expect that I will be honest with you and will seek what is best most therapeutic and best for your health at all times.  Sessions will be 45-50 minutes and we will meet as frequently as you and I agree will be most beneficial for you.

What is your fee, and do you accept insurance?

My fee is $200 per session.  I reserve a certain number of spaces for clients with less financial resources who need a sliding scale structure.

I am not in-network with any insurance companies.

You are credentialed with the State of North Carolina in Psychotherapy as a Pastoral Counselor. Is that the same as Christian Counseling?

Being a Pastoral Psychotherapist or Pastoral Counselor means that in addition to my psychology education and psychoanalytic psychotherapy training, I am trained and educated with a theological education.  A graduate of Duke Divinity School with a Masters of Divinity, I am also ordained in the United Methodist Church and Certified in the State of North Carolina as a Fee-Based Practicing Pastoral Counselor.

Pastoral Psychotherapy or Certified Pastoral Counseling is NOT the same as Christian Counseling.  I do not proselytize, indeed, it is against my professional code of ethics to do so and would be malpractice. I will not lead anyone with an agenda and will rather follow the lead of the client.

If clients’ faith lives/spirituality is important to them, we can explore their circumstances through the lens of their spirituality to understand how they are making meaning of their problems and concerns.  I am comfortable and experienced in working with a wide range of religious and nonreligious backgrounds.
