Many of our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are hardwired and conditioned from our temperaments and our early experiences and coping strategies. Psychodynamic therapy explores the unconscious process and highlights the connections and patterns in our psyches that come to feel quite natural and habitual to us. By becoming aware of these unconscious motivators and defenses, we can make conscious choices to direct our lives instead of simply reacting to our circumstances.
As a former Big Law attorney, I know the stressful terrain of the practice of law, firm culture, and their impactful pressure on lawyers’ lives. Therapy with someone who has walked a mile in your shoes can quickly establish empathy and understanding to provide a richer therapeutic experience. I also work to create a non-judgmental, confidential environment in which you can share without fear or stigma.

Being a Pastoral Psychotherapist or Pastoral Counselor means that in addition to my psychology education and psychoanalytic psychotherapy training, I am trained and educated with a theological education. A graduate of Duke Divinity School with a Masters of Divinity, I am also ordained in the United Methodist Church and Certified in the State of North Carolina as a Fee-Based Practicing Pastoral Counselor.
Pastoral Psychotherapy or Certified Pastoral Counseling is NOT the same as Christian Counseling. I do not proselytize, indeed, it is against my professional code of ethics to do so and would be malpractice. I will not lead anyone with an agenda and will rather follow the lead of the client.
If clients’ faith lives/spirituality is important to them, we can explore their circumstances through the lens of their spirituality to understand how they are making meaning of their problems and concerns.
